Jesus is a celebrity, and all celebrities have hangers-on.
How many times per day do Christians somewhere make Jesus look bad? Maybe hypocritical Christians are like the hangers-on that surround celebrities.
Members of an entourage get to feel important and powerful because of their association with the celeb. I wonder how many people use Jesus this way too. Maybe I’m one of them.
I’m not even cool enough to hang out with the local weatherman, let alone Jesus Christ. When I speak or act in a way that is contrary to Christ’s character, I can easily be that hanger-on who cramps Jesus’ style.
Paul puts it this way:
“5 In your relationships with one another, have the same attitude of mind Christ Jesus had:
6 Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a human being,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!”
Jesus is way cooler than His followers, including me.
