Hannah coaches the varsity cheerleaders at a local high school, and her school played a game recently at Denison University in Granville, OH. I noticed this plaque for Woody Hayes next to the football field. (Click on the image to enlarge it.)
Woody played at Denison and then returned to coach there from 1946 to 1948. He did well, but this was long before he became the college football icon that he now is. Although Woody led the Denison team to a 19 game winning streak during his coaching tenure, I’m sure that no one quite knew the legend he would become.
It reminded me that all of us have yet unwritten histories. In other words, the story of your entire life is yet to be told. Your legacy is still in process. There was a time when Woody Hayes was “just” the football coach at a small Ohio college. Maybe you feel that way now, that you’re “just” ______. The great news is that your future is still to be determined. What will you make it? What will your legacy be?
(Last night, a friend pointed out that many people sabotage whatever great legacy they could leave because they don’t have the confidence to believe they can do it. Will you let a lack of confidence stop you?)
